Crowns Q&A

What is a dental crown?

Proper oral care habits like regular brushing and flossing can help to maintain the health of your teeth over time. However, even when practicing good oral hygiene, your teeth can become broken or degraded. Dental crowns have been designed to address these damaged teeth, restoring their strength, function, and appearance.

A dental crown is a durable cap placed over a damaged tooth. The cap covers the tooth all the way down to the gum line and improves the shape, size, strength, and appearance of the tooth. To maintain their durability, dental crowns are cemented into place.

When are dental crowns used?

A dental crown is used when a tooth has become damaged or compromised but is still rooted in place. There are many reasons why a tooth may need a crown, including:

  • To fix a chipped tooth
  • To hold together a cracked tooth
  • To cover a tooth damaged from decay
  • To strengthen a tooth that has a large filling
  • To hold a dental bridge
  • To improve the appearance of a tooth
  • To attach to a dental implant
  • To improve a tooth’s shape

The Custom Dentures team will work with you to determine whether a dental crown can help you.

What should I expect at my appointment?

Dental crowns usually take two visits to fully install. Initially, you will meet with the Custom Dentures team to review your situation. They examine your mouth and potentially take an X-ray to ensure that the tooth is healthy enough to support a crown. The tooth is then prepared to receive the crown by either scraping off certain portions or building it up with a special filling material.

If your mouth is healthy, the team takes digital impressions. Then, they share the impressions with the technicians at the onsite lab. The technicians create a crown designed to meet your unique specifications. While the crown is being made, you may wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth.

When your crown is finished, you return to Custom Dentures. During this appointment, the team installs the crown and cements it in place. The Custom Dentures team uses the ideal materials for the crown based on your needs, ensuring a perfect fit, a high level of comfort, and a beautiful appearance.
